Chiefs get good news on injury front as team heads out for summer break

In his final update before training camp begins next month, Andy Reid delivered good news on the injury front.

Reid said he expects left tackle Josh Simmons, the team’s first round draft pick in April, and wide receiver Rashee Rice to be full participants when the Chiefs arrive at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph on July 21.

“I think they’re both ready to go,” Reid said. “They actually got great work in these camps here.”

The Chiefs wrapped up mandatory minicamp Thursday with running tests.

Reid has been optimistic about Simmons’ recovery from a torn patellar tendon suffered during his final season at Ohio State. The Chiefs selected him No. 32 overall, and Reid said he could see Simmons starting as a rookie.

“Potentially, yes,” Reid said. “Listen, you can see his athletic ability. You can see his want-to. He’s got a great attitude, he’s approached everything the right way, plus a little bit extra. You can tell — if you just want to look at his rehab, you can see that he had a mindset that: ‘I’m going to get in there. It’s not going to be training camp. It’s going to be like now.’

“He worked his tail off to get there, so you respect that part of it. He’s done a nice job in there. He’s worked well and we’ll just see. We’ll see what training camp does to him. It’s different when things are flying fast up there and you have full contact and pads on. We’ll see how he does.”

Rice suffered a season-ending knee injury in the fourth game last season. He has been a full participant in offseason activities. He seeks to regain the form that made him the team’s top wide receiver at a rookie in 2023 when he caught 79 passes for 938 yards and seven touchdowns.

Rice was on his way to a bigger season in 2024, with 24 receptions for 288 yards and two touchdowns before the injury.

Reid also said second-year tight end Jared Wiley, who suffered a season-ending torn ACL in a November practice last year, is making progress in his recovery.

“I think we’re going to be OK there,” Reid said. “He got some work here the last couple days, so I think we’ll be fine there.”
