Why an NFL first-of-its-kind announcement is relevant to the Kansas City Chiefs

The NFL announced Tuesday that YouTube will stream the Los Angeles Chargers’ Week 1 game in Sao Paulo, Brazil — the first time a contest has been streamed live and exclusively in its entirety on YouTube.

That news will be relevant to Kansas City Chiefs fans soon. The Star has confirmed the Chiefs will be facing the Chargers in that opening-week contest on Friday, Sept. 5; Front Office Sports first reported last week that KC would be the other team in that matchup.

Officially, the Chargers’ opponent will be announced Wednesday, along with the entirety of the NFL schedule.

YouTube’s exclusive rights to this game were a big deal for the NFL, with the league’s executive vice president Hans Schroeder saying he was excited that YouTube would bring this contest to a worldwide audience.

“YouTube and YouTube TV have been incredible partners of the NFL for several years and boast an immense global reach,” Schroeder said in a release, “and we look forward to Week 1 in Sao Paulo.”

There’s an important caveat regarding this Chiefs-Chargers game: Though YouTube is declared the exclusive rights holder, a long-standing NFL policy requires that games be made available on free, over-the-air broadcast television in local markets. That means the Sept. 5 game will still have a TV home in Kansas City.

On Monday, Prime Video announced it would broadcast a Christmas night game between the Chiefs and Denver Broncos in Kansas City. That game will kick off at 7:15 p.m. Central.

The entire Chiefs 2025 schedule is set to be released at 7 p.m. Central Wednesday on NFL Network.
