Kansas City Chiefs add to receiver depth, bring back veteran on 1-year deal | Report
The Kansas City Chiefs made another move to add depth to their receiver position.
KC has agreed to re-sign wideout JuJu Smith-Schuster to a one-year deal, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Smith-Schuster, 28, figures to fill a similar reserve role to what he did last season with the Chiefs. In 14 games, he had 18 catches for 231 yards with two touchdowns, while also serving as one of the team’s best blockers on the perimeter.
The eight-year veteran also made the most of a second chance with the Chiefs after playing one season with the team in 2022.
Smith-Schuster rejoined KC in 2024 after the New England Patriots released him in August. In fact, the Patriots paid the $7 million remaining on Smith-Schuster’s contract to ensure he’d no longer be there.
“It was a mutual decision. I understand it. It goes both ways at the same time,” Smith-Schuster said during Super Bowl week. “But I feel like God had a different path for me.”
Smith-Schuster helped stabilize KC’s offense following early injuries to Rashee Rice and Hollywood Brown. He also made big receiving plays when it mattered, catching two passes for 60 yards in the Chiefs’ AFC Championship win over the Buffalo Bills.
KC has re-signed a couple players at receiver in the past two weeks, with Smith-Schuster joining Brown as guys returning on one-year deals.
The Chiefs also expect their top receiver Rice to be back from a season-ending knee injury next season. However, he’s also likely to face an NFL suspension at some point for his role in a Texas road-racing incident that injured other drivers.
Rookie Xavier Worthy should remain a top option as well following his eight-catch, 157-yard performance in Super Bowl LIX. Skyy Moore and Nikko Remigio, meanwhile, are the other two active-roster receivers on the depth chart.
