KC Chiefs losing key front-office executive to GM job with Tennessee Titans, per reports
The Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly losing a key member of their front office to the Tennessee Titans.
Per multiple reports Friday afternoon, the NFL franchise in Nashville has tapped Chiefs assistant general manager Mike Borgonzi as its next general manager.
Borgonzi was hired by the Chiefs in 2009 and had since filled a variety of roles in Kansas City. He won three Super Bowls with the organization.
In Tennessee he succeeds Ran Carthon, whom the Titans fired after going 9-25 overall across the past two seasons. The Titans hold the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft.
Borgonzi had been considered a strong candidate to become the general manager of the New York Jets. Last year, he interviewed for the same position with the Washington Commanders.
Borgonzi’s tenure in Kansas City predates head coach Andy Reid’s hire in KC following the 2012 season. He joined the Chiefs in 2009 as college scouting administrator under then-general manager Scott Pioli.
He moved his way up through the KC front office, working next with Pioli’s successor as GM, John Dorsey. He was named the Chiefs’ director of football operations in 2018 under current general manager Brett Veach.
With the Chiefs, Borgonzi has overseen the club’s college and professional scouting operations and is a close adviser to Veach.
Borgonzi has had a hand in shaping the Chiefs’ NFL dominance over the past decade: 10 straight AFC West championships, six straight AFC Championship Game appearances, four Super Bowls and three Vince Lombardi Trophies.
In 2022, he helped the Chiefs select a 10-player draft class that could include as many as seven starters in Saturday’s AFC Divisional Round playoff game against the Houston Texans: cornerback Trent McDuffie, defensive end George Karlaftis, safety Bryan Cook, linebacker Leo Chenal, cornerbacks Joshua Williams and Jaylen Watson and running back and Isiah Pacheco.
A year earlier, the Chiefs drafed a pair of Pro Bowl offensive linemen, in Creed Humphrey and Trey Smith, along with linebacker Nick Bolton from Mizzou and tight end Noah Gray.
Borgonzi will become the sixth full-time GM in Titans history. He was was one of six candidates interviewed by the Tennessee organization.
