Jets reportedly will interview members of KC Chiefs for GM and head coach vacancies
When the 2024 NFL season began, the New York Jets had high hopes of making the playoffs for the first time since 2010.
Instead, the Jets finished with a 5-12 record and are looking for a new coach and general manager. Owner Woody Johnson plans to speak with a member of the Chiefs for both job openings.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Monday the Jets requested an interview with Chiefs assistant GM Mike Borgonzi. The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported the Jets plan to speak with Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy for the head-coaching job.
Mike Borgonzi résumé
After the 2020 season, the Chiefs promoted Borgonzi to his current role as general manager Brett Veach’s most-trusted lieutenant.
The Chiefs noted Borgonzi “supervises and directs the club’s college and professional scouting operations while closely supporting and advising general manager Brett Veach with the club’s roster management and player acquisition via the NFL Draft, NFL free agency, street free agency, waiver claims and trades.”
Borgonzi is in his 16th season with the Chiefs, making him one of the longest-tenured front-office members.
He was the Chiefs’ director of football operations from 2018-20 and has worked as director of player personnel (2017) and co-director of player personnel (2015-16).
Borgonzi joined the Chiefs as a college scouting administrator in 2009. He’s also worked as manager of football operations (2010), pro personnel scout (2011-12) and assistant director of pro scouting (2013-14).
Last year, Borgonzi was interviewed by the Washington Commanders for their general manager position.
Matt Nagy in demand
Nagy is in his eighth season with the Chiefs, serving two stints under head coach Andy Reid. Nagy was the Chiefs’ quarterbacks coach from 2013-15, co-offensive coordinator in 2016 and then held that job by himself in 2017.
The Bears hired Nagy as head coach in 2018; he spent four seasons in Chicago, making two playoff appearances.
Nagy returned to the Chiefs in 2022 as quarterbacks coach, then was promoted to offensive coordinator ahead of the 2023 season.
Russini previously reported that the Saints were expected “to show interest” in Nagy for their head-coaching job.
