Why Chiefs’ plan to save Patrick Mahomes from Browns’ Myles Garrett only sorta worked

The Kansas City Chiefs surrendered constant pressure against the Cleveland Browns in KC’s 21-7 victory Sunday — but it wasn’t because of a lack of game-planning.

In this video, KC Star reporter Jesse Newell and Brett Taveau (author of the Chiefs book “Unpacking Greatness” and a longtime high school offensive coordinator) take a closer look at how KC tried to limit Cleveland edge rusher Myles Garrett’s impact — while also helping out fill-in left tackle Joe Thuney.

The Chiefs certainly put a lot of effort into figuring out how to protect quarterback Patrick Mahomes. KC’s coaches mixed up protections, put multiple hands on Garrett and even schemed plays where he wouldn’t be involved in a snap regardless of the outcome.

In the end, though, that formula had an expiration date, with KC’s offense facing multiple issues while limited by the plays it could run.
