Add a wide receiver to Chiefs’ injury update (and note D.J. Humphries’ starting status)
A new name surfaced on the Chiefs’ injury list Friday: wide receiver and return man Mecole Hardman.
Coach Andy Reid said Friday that Hardman’s knee “locked up on him and we’re evaluating that now.” The injury occurred after some team meetings but before the Chiefs took the field for practice, Reid said.
Hardman, listed as questionable for the Sunday Night Football home game against the Los Angeles Chargers, has 12 receptions for 90 yards. He’s rushed for 62 yards and a touchdown on five carries.
He is also the Chiefs’ primary punt-return specialist. He has 20 returns for a 10.3-yard average. He’s also averaged 26.4 yards on five kickoff returns.
As for D.J. Humphries, Reid stopped short of naming him the starting left tackle for the “Sunday Night Football” game at home against the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Chiefs’ starting left tackle for the previous 10 games, Wanya Morris, was benched late in last week’s victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. The Chiefs finished the Black Friday game with guard Joe Thuney playing the position.
The Chiefs signed Humphries Nov. 25. He is returning from a torn ACL suffered in Week 17 last year while he was playing for the Arizona Cardinals.
“I’m going to stick with what I told you before,” Reid said. “He took some reps; let’s just see how he ends up after today and go from there.
“We’ve rotated guys in there. He made it through yesterday good.”
