Chiefs are going back out West

When we last saw the Chiefs, they were finding forehead-slapping ways to lose a road game against the San Francisco 49ers.

One bye and two weeks later, Andy Reid and company are back in the Golden State to take on the team of Alex Smith’s youth, the San Diego Chargers.

“Smith” and “homecoming” were the watchwords at San Francisco, too, but for a different reason. It was the Niners, after all, who nabbed Alex out of Utah with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft.

Step back in time a bit further, and Smith was starring at Helix High School in La Mesa, a suburb of San Diego. His backfield mate on that team was none other than Reggie Bush, who would go on to star at Southern Cal and then in the NFL with the Saints, Dolphins and, today, Lions.

Ah, but we digress. Suffice to say that Smith, Reid and the rest of the Chiefs won’t lack for motivation on Sunday against the division-rival Chargers.
