KC Chiefs make pre-game signing, agreeing to contract extension with tight end
The Chiefs made news before their season opener against the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday, signing tight end Noah Gray to a three-year contract extension.
The deal is worth $19.5 million. It was first ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Gray, starting his fourth NFL season, has recorded 19 receptions and four touchdowns in 50 regular-season games. In each of the past two seasons he’s played 52% of the Chiefs’ offensive snaps and has also been used on several special teams.
He’s the Chiefs’ second tight end on the depth chart behind superstar Travis Kelce, and his role is expected to expand this year.
General manager Brett Veach said recently that Gray could receive fewer special teams snaps and more with the offense.
“It would be good to take Noah (Gray) off some of those things,” Veach said in August. “I think Noah continues to get better, and he’s a guy that I think we want to feature (in the offense) a little bit more.”
Gray is the second player from the Chiefs’ 2021 draft class to sign an extension, following center Creed Humphrey two weeks ago. Others from the class who are seeking extensions are linebacker Nick Bolton and guard Trey Smith.
Gray was a fifth-round selection from Duke.
