Chiefs

Here’s who’s on Kansas City Chiefs’ initial practice squad (and also who isn’t)

The Kansas City Chiefs announced an initial 16-man practice squad Wednesday, and a notable name is not on it.

Running back Louis Rees-Zammit — a rugby star from Wales looking to transition to American football — is no longer on the team. ESPN’s Tom Hamilton reported Wednesday that Rees-Zammit is signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars’ practice squad.

The Chiefs, while reserving 16 of their potential 17 practice-squad players Wednesday, brought back many guys who seemed to be on this week’s roster bubble.

That includes receiver Justyn Ross, who impressed at times in training camp with his ability to win jump-ball catches on the sideline. Receiver Nikko Remigio is also returning, as he’s a favorite of special teams coordinator Dave Toub and spent the entirety of camp as the team’s top kickoff returner.

KC is also bringing back four-year veteran tackle Lucas Niang, safety Deon Bush, defensive tackles Neil Farrell and Matt Dickerson and linebacker Cole Christiansen. Each contributed at times last season during the team’s Super Bowl season.

NFL teams get 16 players on their practice squads, while the Chiefs received a 17th spot thanks to an exception allowed because of the NFL’s International Player Pathway program. Chu Godrick, a tackle, has been added to the practice squad via that rule.

The Chiefs have one practice squad vacancy remaining. NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported Wednesday that Patriots quarterback Baily Zappe would be joining the Chiefs to be on their practice squad.

Also, KC waived cornerback Nic Jones on Wednesday to make room for waiver claim Eric Scott, so the Chiefs could make an additional cut from their practice squad this week if Jones clears waivers and KC would like to add him.
