The Kansas City Chiefs are beginning to shorten their roster ahead of Tuesday’s deadline to reach the NFL’s mandate of 53 players for the regular season.
KC cut cornerback Kelvin Joseph and receiver Kyle Sheets, the Star’s Sam McDowell confirmed, and also waived guard Nick Torres, according to a Star source.
Joseph, at 10:01 a.m., sent out a hands-folded emoji on his X account.
More trimming took place following Monday’s practice.
Other players that were waived or released Monday, according to the Chiefs: quarterback Ian Book; receiver Phillip Brooks; tight end Geor’Quarius Spivey; offensive lineman Griffin McDowell; linebacker Owen Carney; cornerbacks Ekow Boye-Doe and Miles Battle; defensive tackle Alex Gubner; and long-snapper Randen Plattner.
Safety Tyree Gillespie wasn’t seen at practice Monday.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Monday morning that the Chiefs had cut Book, while Herbie Teope reported KC waived Gubner and Brooks.
Also Monday, the Chiefs welcomed receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster back to practice after signing him earlier in the day. Smith-Schuster wore No. 9, while running back Louis Rees-Zammit switched to 49, which is also punter Matt Araiza’s number.
The Chiefs also had defensive tackle Chris Jones (shoulder) and running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire (illness) back at practice.
NFL teams have until 3 p.m. Central Time on Tuesday to get to their final roster size of 53 players.
The Chiefs’ 2024 season begins Thursday, Sept. 5, with a game against the Baltimore Ravens at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
