Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes hopes to own NFL team someday: ‘I love this sport’
Now that Patrick Mahomes has added a piece of a Formula 1 team to the list of sports entities in his ownership portfolio, one big prize remains.
An NFL team.
“If I can get there I might settle down,” Mahomes said. “They make it pretty tough to get to that spot.”
Mahomes’ properties already include portions of baseball’s Royals and soccer’s Sporting KC and the KC Current, also partly owned by his wife Brittany.
But an NFL team would be the crown of his investments.
“I love this sport and want to give back in any way possible when I’m done playing,” Mahomes said. “I’ll be a Chiefs fan. At the same time I want to have this competitive edge that I’ve had the entire time.”
Mahomes, whose restructured contract announced last month will pay him $210 million over four years, said he’s considered an ownership stake in another major-league sports team, in the NBA or NHL.
“I’m always looking around,” Mahomes said. “I can’t do it in the NFL while I’m playing. I’m always looking around at other sports. I’m always keeping my ears open.”
Earlier this week, Mahomes and his teammate, tight end Travis Kelce, were announced as part of an ownership group in the Alpine F1 team.
“Everybody can see the appeal,” Mahomes said of entering F1. “I’ve been able to get to a couple of races, seeing the environment, watching “Drive to Survive” on Netflix, you see how competitive it is.
“When you have an opportunity to get in on that, I’m as competitive as anyone. It can open up to some great opportunities.
“They came to us with the opportunity, I jumped at it. I’m excited for it and obviously having Trav with me. It will be cool to be able to go to some of the events, and maybe some of the (races) around the world.”
