Chiefs’ blowout over Bears let Patrick Mahomes get most rest since 2019: Snap counts

Patrick Mahomes comes close to the perfect attendance ribbon. Since starting his first game for the Chiefs in 2017, he’s taken every offensive snap in 66 of his 83 games.

But Sunday’s 41-10 blowout victory over the Chicago Bears gave Andy Reid the opportunity to pull Mahomes from action, along with other starters in the second half.

Backups like Blaine Gabbert finished the game, and Mahomes didn’t have to put any more pressure on his right leg. Bears defensive end Yannick Ngakoue rolled over Mahomes’ ankle at the end of a pass play, the same ankle he injured in the AFC Divisional Round game against Jacksonville last season.

The play happened in the second quarter, and Mahomes played the first series of the third quarter, capping a drive with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Travis Kelce. That was Mahomes’ last play, finishing the day with a season-high three touchdown passes and 127.3 passer rating.

Mahomes was in on 56 of the team’s 77 offensive snaps. The 73% was the second lowest of his career; the lowest percentage was the game at Denver in 2019 when Mahomes injured his knee on the quarterback keeper and missed the next two games.

Sunday, only offensive lineman Trey Smith and Joe Thuney played all 100%. On defense, safety Bryan Cook didn’t come off the field, taking all 51 snaps.
