Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes wanted editorial control with Netflix series ‘Quarterbacks’

Patrick Mahomes can talk a good game. The problem is he doesn’t always know what he said, or whether he even said it.

As he was helping select the moments about his 2022 season that would be included in the Netflix docuseries “Quarterback” — it drops July 12 — Mahomes said he was glad he had some control over the content.

“I had some editing rights because I’m kind of wild on the field,” Mahomes said. “I don’t remember the things that I say. But I’m a competitor. That’s just who I am.”

Specifically?

“I tried to cut out as much profanity as I could, but it’s hard,” he said. “You would get nothing.”

From the trailer that was released this week, several clips involving Mahomes include rated-PG language and mild smack talk.

Mahomes said the series will be an eye-opener for fans. It takes viewers through a season of Kirk Cousins, of the Minnesota Vikings, and Marcus Mariota, who spent last season with the Atlanta Falcons and is now with the Philadelphia Eagles.

“They’re going to see how different I am here and on the field,” Mahomes said. ‘You’ll see different perspectives from the quarterback position and you can have success in different ways.”

Netflix has developed series involving other sports, such as Formula I racing (“Drive to Survive”) and golf (“Full Swing,” which features, among others, Blue Valley North High grad Harry Higgs).

This is the streaming service’s first behind-the-scenes drama that’s focused on the NFL.

Camera crews spent practices and games with the teams, but Chiefs coach Andy Reid said it wasn’t an intrusive experience.

“He (Mahomes) handled himself right, so it didn’t affect anybody, and those guys did a nice job of staying away,” Reid said. “Everything was distant. It wasn’t a distraction.”
