The parade route celebrating the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory will be a familiar one for fans — after all it was just three years ago that they lined these streets celebrating a previous championship win.

City officials announced Monday morning that the route will start at Sixth Street and head south on Grand Boulevard through downtown and past the T-Mobile Center. Once it reaches Pershing Road, it will cut over and end at Union Station.

The parade kicks off at noon Wednesday and will last about 1 1/2 hours. It will be followed by an hour-long rally that begins about 1:45 p.m. in front of Union Station and the National WWI Museum and Memorial’s north lawn.

Street closures were set to begin at 2 p.m. on Tuesday and last until around 7 p.m. Wednesday.

As an estimated 500,000 were expected to visit downtown for the events, traffic and parking were expected to be impacted greatly. The Kansas City Area Transportation Authority was creating five “park-and-ride” spots around the metro for people to take advantage of.

Hundreds of police officers and firefighters were to be assigned to the parade route to ensure the event remained safe. Two emergency medical tents and seven reunification points for families were being set up at the route to address anticipated public safety needs.

“The Kansas City Chiefs continue to be a source of excitement, inspiration and celebration for Chiefs fans in Kansas City and around the nation,” Mayor Quinton Lucas said in a news release.

“We will cheer on the World Champion Kansas City Chiefs this Wednesday as our victory parade goes through downtown Kansas City,” the mayor continued. “I look forward to seeing Kansas Citians show our country, and the world, why Kansas City is a sports town like nowhere else.”

The parade and the upcoming NFL Draft will occur within a few weeks of each other and “is truly historic,” Kathy Nelson, president and CEO of the Kansas City Sports Commission, said in the release.

“Kansas City continues to show up for our professional teams and I have no doubt Wednesday’s parade will be another memorable milestone for our city,” she said.

Fans were reminded that the celebration is a family-friendly event and public consumption of alcohol is prohibited. Fans are urged to travel light and not to bring bags or backpacks.
