Class canceled for Chiefs parade. One player says: ‘You’re off of school. Let’s goooo!’
Kansas City area school districts are giving students and teachers the day off on Wednesday so they can celebrate the Chiefs’ Super Bowl win and attend the victory parade.
Lee’s Summit schools tweeted a video of Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster to let students know: “Parade is on Wednesday. You’re off of school. Let’s goooo!”
Many other districts have canceled classes and activities Wednesday, including: Kansas City Public Schools, Center, North Kansas City, Independence, Park Hill, Raymore-Peculiar, Liberty, Hickman Mills, Blue Springs, Fort Osage, Kearney, Blue Valley, Shawnee Mission, Olathe, Gardner Edgerton, Spring Hill, De Soto, Bonner Springs-Edwardsville, Pleasant Hill, Grandview and Kansas City, Kansas.
After the Chiefs’ Super Bowl win in 2020, area school districts saw droves of teachers calling in absent and struggled to find enough substitutes, so most canceled classes that Wednesday so families could watch the victory parade.
And districts are doing the same this year.
“After much discussion, it was decided that it would be difficult to maintain a normal school day due to the high number of families and staff planning to attend the 2023 Super Bowl Champions celebration activities,” the Blue Valley district said in a tweet.
The parade will start at noon Wednesday at the corner of Grand Boulevard and Sixth Street, according to a news release. It will move south on Grand and turn right on Pershing Road, ending at Union Station for the victory rally starting around 1:45 p.m..
Almost all cross streets on Grand between Sixth Street and Pershing will be closed. The National WWI Museum and Memorial will have its north lawn open for visitors to view the festivities.
