Days after suffering a high-ankle sprain, Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes practiced Wednesday
The Chiefs had all of their active players on the practice field Wednesday ahead of Sunday’s showdown against the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship Game at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
That included quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who is dealing with a right high-ankle sprain.
“He’ll practice; he did the walk-through this morning,” Reid said during his lunchtime meeting with the media. “He’ll practice this afternoon.”
Reid added that he believed Mahomes would “do everything,” and the prediction turned out to be true. The Chiefs later in the afternoon designated Mahomes as a full participant, meaning the All-Pro quarterback took a normal workload with full-team drills.
Mahomes said before practice that he felt good and was excited to get back on the practice field to see what he could do.
“I’ve had a few days of treatment, a few days of rehab,” Mahomes said. “Excited to get on the practice field and kind of test it out, and see where I’m at, but it’s feeling good so far.”
Mahomes suffered the injury in the first quarter of the Chiefs’ win Saturday over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC Divisional Round. He left the game in KC shortly before halftime to receive X-rays, which were negative, and then returned to action to start the second half.
His movement was clearly limited against the Jaguars, but he finished the game throwing for 195 yards and two touchdowns before immediately undergoing treatment.
Mahomes said after the game that he wouldn’t come out of a playoff game, and he appeared to have the same approach for Sunday.
“I’m doing good and (it’s) AFC Championship Week,” he said. “Ready to go.”
Reid said wide receiver Mecole Hardman would also be back on the practice field. Hardman, who was inactive for last weekend’s AFC Divisional Round game, hasn’t played since Nov. 6.
“He feels better than he did the the last couple of weeks,” Reid said. “Again, we’ll just see how does every day here, and he seems to be in a good place.”
The Chiefs later in the afternoon designated Hardman as a limited participant. Linebacker WIllie Gay Jr. (toe) and running back Jerick McKinnon (ankle) practiced fully.
