Chiefs coordinator Eric Bieniemy has interviewed with Indy, Colts owner Jim Irsay says
Another year presents another opportunity for Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy.
Colts owner Jim Irsay announced Thursday night that he concluded an interview with Bieniemy for the team’s vacant head coach job. The Colts fired Frank Reich in early November.
If hired in Indianapolis, Bieniemy would reunite with Colts general manager Chris Ballard, who served as the Chiefs’ director of player personnel (2013-14) and director of football operations (2015-16) before leaving in 2017.
Irsay’s announcement marks the first known interview for Bieniemy during the NFL’s current hiring cycle for teams seeking head coaches. Other teams in search of a head coach are the Arizona Cardinals, Denver Broncos, Houston Texans and Carolina Panthers.
Since 2019, Bieniemy has undergone multiple such interviews, including with the AFC West-rival Denver Broncos following the 2021 regular season. But he has yet to receive a known offer.
Despite being passed over — sometimes for coaches with less NFL coaching experience — over the past four hiring cycles, Bieniemy continues to seek a chance to take over his own team.
And he has the continued support of his current boss.
“I know what he can do,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said in late December. “I’ve said it 100 times. I haven’t changed my opinion on that. So, I hope he gets an opportunity. I’d rather not have it at Denver, but I hope he gets an opportunity.”
Bieniemy joined Reid’s coaching staff in 2013, first serving as the Chiefs’ running backs coach and then taking over as offensive coordinator in 2018.
