Chiefs punter Tommy Townsend earns AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors
Chiefs punter Tommy Townsend’s powerful right leg has earned him an NFL award.
The league on Wednesday named Townsend the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week after his performance in Sunday’s 30-24 overtime win over the Houston Texans.
With the offense sputtering early, the Chiefs leaned on Townsend to help flip field position and he responded in kind.
Townsend had four punts in the game for 193 yards, including a long of 57 yards. He averaged 48.3 yards per effort while netting an average of 42.5 yards. Two of his punts landed inside Houston’s 20-yard line, and the Texans’ average starting field position after Townsend’s punts was the 17.5-yard line, best in the AFC in Week 15.
Wednesday’s announcement marked Townsend’s third-career AFC Special Teams Player of the Week award. He previously won it in Week 9 of the 2021 season and Week 15 of the 2020 campaign.
The NFL also named Townsend as the AFC Special Teams Player of the Month for September this season.
