In contract year, Chiefs’ JuJu Smith-Schuster makes clear where he wants to be in 2023
It’s only Week 10, but Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster is already making it clear where he wants to play next season.
Smith-Schuster, who played his first four NFL seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, signed a one-year, $10.75 million max contract with Kansas City this past offseason.
“I would love to stay here, to be honest,” he said Thursday. “This offense is unbelievable; the coaching staff is unbelievable.
“If it was up to me, yeah, of course, why not? To be able to play with one of the best quarterbacks in the game, so yeah.”
Smith-Schuster has done nothing but impress as a starter for the Chiefs alongside Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who joined the team on a three-year deal in the wake of the Tyreek Hill trade to Miami.
Through eight games, Smith-Schuster has accumulated 44 catches for 582 yards and two touchdowns on 60 targets, averaging 13.2 yards per reception.
Smith-Schuster enters Week 10’s home game against the Jacksonville Jaguars as the Chiefs’ second-leading receiver behind tight end Travis Kelce.
And the receiver who turns 26 on Nov. 22 has remained healthy, which was an issue for him in Pittsburgh last season.
The Chiefs have a few decisions to make at the wide receiver position for 2023. In addition to Smith-Schuster, Mecole Hardman and Justin Watson are in contract years.
