Chiefs trade for NY Giants WR, former 1st-round pick Kadarius Toney ahead of deadline

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a big splash before the NFL trade deadline.

The Chiefs acquired second-year receiver Kadarius Toney from the New York Giants for a 2023 conditional third-round pick and sixth-round pick, The Star confirmed Thursday. The move was first reported by NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

Toney presents both short-term and long-term potential for the Chiefs at receiver after being selected by the Giants with the 20th pick in the 2021 draft. The Chiefs will pay the rest of his salary this season — his remaining base salary is $784,000 — and also have him under contract in 2023 at $1.9 million and in 2024 at $2.5 million. Toney potentially becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2026, as KC will hold a fifth-year option for him as a first-round pick.

The 6-foot, 193-pound Toney has missed the last five games with a hamstring injury. He has flashed talent when healthy, finishing second on the Giants last season with a 72.8 offensive grade at Pro Football Focus.

Toney had two catches for no yards in two games this season before sitting out with his injury. Last year, in 10 games, he had 39 catches for 420 yards.

The Chiefs could see Toney as a long-term fit given their current roster construction. Receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, for example, is on a one-year contract, making it possible he won’t be with Kansas City again next year.

Mecole Hardman also is in the final year of his rookie contract with the Chiefs.

The Star’s Herbie Teope contributed to this report.
