Chiefs’ health ahead of Sunday’s 49ers game? Just one player missed practice Thursday
Just one Chiefs player missed practice on Thursday ahead of Sunday’s Week 7 game at the San Francisco 49ers.
Cornerback Rashad Fenton (hamstring) was the lone Chiefs player unable to take part on the practice field, marking his second straight day of missed time ahead of Sunday’s game at Levi’s Stadium.
Fenton suffered the injury in Week 5 and didn’t play Sunday against the Buffalo Bills, prompting the Chiefs to go with rookie Joshua Williams alongside L’Jarius Sneed and rookie Jaylen Watson in Week 6.
The Chiefs could have help on the way, however. First-round rookie corner Trent McDuffie was set to practice Thursday and is eligible to return from injured reserve, should the Chiefs choose to activate him.
“I go off of what (head athletic trainer) Rick (Burkholder) says, in Trent’s case,” said Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who added that McDuffie “looked good” during Wednesday’s practice.
McDuffie’s 21-day window to return to the active 53-player roster after being hurt in Week 1 opened last week, when the Chiefs designated him as “return to practice.”
Linebacker Willie Gay Jr., who returned Monday from a four-game NFL suspension, should also be on the practice field as the team looks to work him back into game action.
“He’s a ball of energy,” Spagnuolo said. “He’s going to be 100 miles per hour no matter what. But he’s rusty. He hasn’t been in there for a month, so he’ll have to knock some rust off.
“We need to do that. We need to get him out there and get rolling.”
Left guard Joe Thuney (ankle) and defensive end Mike Danna (calf) were on the field for practice Thursday. Both missed practice Wednesday.
The Chiefs later in the afternoon listed Thuney and Danna as limited participants.
Sneed (knee), wide receiver Mecole Hardman (heel), kicker Harrison Butker (ankle), right guard Trey Smith (pectoral) and rookie safety Bryan Cook (concussion) practiced fully Thursday. Cook, who was limited in Wednesday’s practice, is attempting to return from a concussion suffered in Week 5.
The Chiefs were to release their official injury report, with practice designations, later Thursday afternoon.
