For KC Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, a victory on Saturday, and this honor after the game
Patrick Mahomes engineered touchdown drives on the Chiefs’ first possessions in Saturday’s 24-14 preseason victory over the Washington Commanders on Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium. He then went to the bench.
But his football day wasn’t done.
After the game Mahomes returned to the field, where it was announced that he will be enshrined in the Texas Tech Ring of Honor and Hall of Fame at his alma mater.
Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt, Andy Reid, Mahomes’ wife Brittany and his family part of the on-field celebration.
The formal ceremony will happen on Oct. 28, during a ceremony on campus in Lubbock, Texas. Mahomes’ name will be unveiled on the West Stadium Building of Jones AT&T Stadium the next day when Texas Tech hosts Baylor.
The Chiefs have their bye that weekend, so Mahomes won’t have to concern himself with a game in Kansas City.
“When you look at the face of the NFL, that is Patrick Mahomes,” Texas Tech athleitc director Kirby Hocutt said. “Patrick’s accomplishments at Texas Tech are well documented with his success as one of the top quarterbacks in college football history.
“Patrick is an NFL MVP and a Super Bowl champion, but he’s, most importantly, a Red Raider who remains an avid supporter of our great university. We are excited to welcome home Patrick and his family later this fall to see his name formally honored inside Jones AT&T Stadium.”
Hocutt started the Ring of Honor, and the first class was inducted in 2012. It included a former Chiefs player, center E.J. Holub, who was a five-time All-AFL selection and was the starting center in Super Bowl IV.
At Texas Tech, Mahomes led the nation in total offense in his final two seasons. He became the 12th quarterback in FBS history, at the time, to pass for 5,000 yards in a season (2016).
The Chiefs traded up and made Mahomes the 10th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.
