Orlando Brown Jr. reports to Kansas City Chiefs training camp, expected to sign tender

Left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. reported to Chiefs training camp Monday and was expected to sign his franchise contract tender.

Brown’s agent, Michael Portner, confirmed an NFL Network report to The Star on Monday of Brown’s intention to play during the 2022 season on the tag.

“He wanted to be there for padded practice because that’s when leaders are developed,” Portner told the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

The Chiefs earlier placed Brown on the franchise tag — a one-year deal worth $16.7 million — while working toward a multiyear contract. However, the two sides failed to reach a deal before the NFL’s July 15 deadline, meaning Brown would either sit out or play the 2022 season on the tag.

Brown chose the latter, but missed the first full week of camp. He wasn’t at Monday’s practice but arrived in St. Joseph later in the day.

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach told The Star last week he hopes to work toward a contract extension with Brown, 26, after the season.

“The agency has advisors around him, and we respect his decision,” Veach said. “And it’s not going to limit our pursuit of him next year. We’re gonna continue to try to get him locked up.”
