Clark Hunt ‘hopeful’ his KC Chiefs are one of teams selected to play international game
The NFL will announce the slate of international games on May 4, ahead of the full regular season release on May 12.
If the Chiefs had their way, they would be one of the teams set to play in England, Germany and Mexico in 2022.
“The league will be playing a number of international games,” Chiefs chairman & CEO Clark Hunt said Friday. “I’m hopeful that we’ll be one of them.”
The NFL announced in February that the Green Bay Packers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Arizona Cardinals, New Orleans Saints and Jacksonville Jaguars would play in the league’s annual international series.
The Buccaneers drew the first-ever game in Germany while the Packers, Saints and Jaguars are to play in England. The Cardinals will play in Mexico City, the site of the Chiefs’ last international game in 2019.
Of the locations, Germany could make the most sense for the Chiefs for an international game because of the team’s close relationship with Bayern Munich.
The Chiefs already know they will host the first Thursday Night Football game in Week 2 this season. Now, the Chiefs wait to see if they are one of the teams identified to make the trip overseas in 2022.
“If we’re not selected this year, I think that we’ll be selected in the next two or three years,” Hunt said. “Obviously, we would be excited to play in Germany if the opportunity presents itself.”
