KC Chiefs awarded 2 compensatory draft picks, bringing total number of selections to 9
The Chiefs were awarded a pair of compensatory picks in the 2022 NFL Draft, the NFL announced Tuesday, bringing their total number of selections next month to nine.
The league uses a complex formula, developed by the NFL management council, to determine compensatory picks “based on salary, playing time and postseason honors” from players lost in the previous season. The Chiefs’ two compensatory picks are in the third round (103rd overall) and seventh round (259th).
Among the players the Chiefs saw leave during free agency in 2021, defensive end Tanoh Kpassagnon, wide receiver Sammy Watkins and linebacker Damien Wilson helped Kansas City qualify for a compensatory pick. The Chiefs gained guard Joe Thuney.
The Chiefs also received a compensatory pick in the third round because of Ryan Poles’ departure as a minority hire to take over the general manager position for the Chicago Bears.
As of now, and barring a trade of picks, the Chiefs will have nine selections in the draft with which to add talent to their roster:
- Round 1 (30th overall)
- Round 2 (62nd)
- Round 3 (94th)
- Round 3 (103rd — Ryan Poles compensation)
- Round 4 (134th)
- Round 7 (231st from Minnesota Vikings for Mike Hughes trade)
- Round 7 (243st from Raiders via Patriots for Yasir Durant trade)
- Round 7 (251st)
- Round 7 (259th compensatory pick)
The 2022 NFL Draft is scheduled for April 28-30 in Las Vegas.
