KC Chiefs and Frank Clark agree to restructured contract, giving team needed cap relief
Chiefs defensive end Frank Clark isn’t going anywhere in the near future.
The Chiefs and Clark agreed Monday night to a two-year, $29 million-base restructured contract with $7 million in incentives , a source familiar with the situation confirmed with The Star.
The NFL Network first reported the news.
Before the reworked deal, Clark was set to earn a base salary of $19 million in 2022 and $20.5 million in 2023. Those figures had Clark counting as a massive $26.3 million cap hit in 2022. The Chiefs opened for business on Monday morning at $5.9 million over the salary cap,
The new deal gives the Chiefs much-needed cap relief ahead of the NFL’s new calendar year, which begins Wednesday.
With Clark now returning to his right defensive end position, the Chiefs can enter the free-agent market looking for a complementary piece at the left defensive end spot.
Since joining the Chiefs in 2019, Clark has been selected to three straight Pro Bowls. He finished last season with 22 tackles, 4.5 sacks and 17 quarterback hits.
