Chiefs

Kansas City was named a top 10 football city in the U.S. We knew that, but check out why

Kansas City is the home of the Chiefs and with them, it’s also one of the best football cities in the United States.

While we’d put it at number one, WalletHub’s 2022 ranking for best and worst football cities for fans has Kansas City in the top 10.

The city scored a 43.17, which is good for 11th overall for best football cities and 10th for large cities in the U.S. WalletHub tracked 21 relevant metrics across 245 cities, choosing the cities if they had at least one NFL or NCAA football team. Some of the metrics include:

  • How many football teams a city has, whether it’s college or professional

  • The team’s on-field performance

  • How many championships it’s won, including the team’s division and Super Bowl wins

  • The average ticket price, size and attendance of the stadium

  • How engaged the fans are with the team

Kansas City’s ranks placed them eighth overall for pro football:

  • They were second for the performance level of NFL team

  • Their average ticket price placed them in ninth

  • 10th in NFL stadium capacity and the overall number of NFL championship wins

  • The number one city for NFL fan attendance, but 13th in NFL fan engagement

For large cities, which looked at U.S. cities with over 300,000 residents, Kansas City was behind Pittsburgh — who finished first overall — Dallas, Boston, Los Angeles, New York, Miami, New Orleans, Cincinnati and Indianapolis.

A 236 ranking in the college football standings dragged the city down. They’re not alone at the bottom, as they share that ranking with other NFL-heavy cities like Dallas, Green Bay, San Francisco, Glendale, Denver, Cleveland, Chicago, Detroit and Jacksonville.

We’ll take it for now, but with another strong showing by the Chiefs next season, perhaps Kansas City can jump to the top spot.
