KC Chiefs’ Clyde Edwards-Helaire misses another practice. Could be Williams’ time again

The Chiefs’ early-week hopes that running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire will be able to play this weekend took a hit on Wednesday.

Edwards-Helaire (shoulder) missed a second straight day of practice, the Chiefs announced.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid had said Tuesday that there’s “a chance” Edwards-Helaire, who was unable to play in last weekend’s loss at Cincinnati, could return to face the Broncos on Saturday in the Chiefs’ regular-season finale at Denver.

But two straight missed practices dampen that optimism. Including the three practices the second-year pro missed last week, Edwards-Helaire has now missed five consecutive days of on-field work after suffering a collarbone injury during the Chiefs’ Week 16 victory over Pittsburgh.

If Edwards-Helaire doesn’t practice Thursday, the Chiefs are once again likely to rely on Darrel Williams as their starter to close out the season before shifting their focus to the playoffs.

Williams rushed for 88 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries in the Chiefs’ 34-31 loss to the Bengals last weekend.

The Chiefs also practiced Wednesday without rookie tackle Lucas Niang, who suffered a ruptured patellar tendon against the Bengals. The team’s announcement of Niang’s absence from the practice field was a formality, given the typical season-ending nature of his injury.

Left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. (calf), linebacker Anthony Hitchens (knee) and cornerback L’Jarius Sneed (knee) all practiced fully Thursday, a day after being limited. Defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi (shoulder) practiced fully for the second straight day.
