Lucas Niang gets nod again as KC Chiefs rule out Remmers for Sunday’s game vs. Packers

Rookie Lucas Niang, who opened the season as the Chiefs’ starting right tackle before giving way to veteran Mike Remmers in Week 6, will remain a starter on an offensive line tasked with protecting superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes this weekend against the Green Bay Packers.

Remmers missed his third straight practice with a knee injury on Friday and has been ruled out for Sunday’s game at Arrowhead Stadium.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid indicated that he expects no dropoff from Remmers to Niang.

“Lucas obviously worked had to get himself back and ready to go,” Reid said. “There were a couple of techniques that he needed to work on, fundamentals, and he did that. I thought he played very respectable this past week on Monday night.”

Remmers’ knee injury appeared late on last week’s injury report, leading the Chiefs to declare him inactive for the Giants game.

He was the only Chiefs player who did not practice Friday, a positive sign that most if not all of the rest of the 53-man squad, including linebacker Anthony Hitchens (triceps), should be available for action Sunday.

Hitchens, who hasn’t played since Week 6, was able to practice fully the past three days and doesn’t carry an injury designation into Sunday’s matchup.

The Chiefs later designated defensive tackle Khalen Saunders (knee) as questionable for Sunday’s game. Saunders had practiced in full for the entire week.
