A day after one of their most well-attended practices in weeks, the Chiefs took a small step in the opposite direction.

Starting safety Tyrann Mathieu missed practice with an illness on Friday, three days before the Chiefs are set to play host to the Giants on Monday Night Football at Arrowhead Stadium.

Defensive end Chris Jones (personal reasons), linebacker Anthony Hitchens (triceps) and defensive tackle Khalen Saunders (knee) remained out of practice for a second straight day. Saunders and Hitchens were present but did not partake. Jones is away from the team.

Fullback Michael Burton (pectoral muscle) was limited for the second day this week, but two Chiefs joined him on that designation. After not appearing on the injury report Thursday, right tackle Mike Remmers (knee) and cornerback Charvarius Ward (foot) were limited Friday.

All players will have an official game-day designation status after Saturday’s practice.

Ward has missed time this year with a wrist injury. Jones is also dealing with wrist and groin injuries. Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Thursday he expected Jones to return to the team Friday night, but it remains to be seen if Jones is healthy enough to participate in practice or play Monday against the Giants. He suffered the groin injury during last week’s loss in Tennessee.

Quarterback Chad Henne (finger), tight end Travis Kelce (neck), right guard Trey Smith (ankle), cornerback L’Jarius Sneed (wrist), left guard Joe Thuney (hand) and running back Darrel Williams (hamstring) were full participants Friday.
