Andy Reid has trust in KC Chiefs running backs who follow injured Clyde Edwards-Helaire

The Chiefs have lost their starting running back, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, to a knee injury. But coach Andy Reid likes how the Chiefs can distribute snaps with the remainder of their depth chart.

That’s Darrel Williams and Jerick McKinnon.

“We have trust in the other two guys,” Reid said. “Particularly Darrel, he’s been productive since he’s been here.”

Williams, a fourth-year pro, is second on the team with 26 rushing attempts. He’s averaged 3.9 yards per attempt and has scored two of the three Chiefs rushing touchdowns this season. He could get his first NFL start on Sunday at Washington.

“It would mean a lot to me,” Williams said. “When I get the opportunity, I have to seize the moment.”

McKinnon spent his first four NFL seasons with the Minnesota Vikings and last year with the San Francisco 49ers. He signed with the Chiefs in April.

McKinnon got his first rushing attempt of the season against Buffalo. He also caught two passes, giving him three receptions this season.

The Chiefs activated Derrick Gore from their practice squad on Tuesday. He rushed for 86 yards in 18 attempts and caught six passes for 82 yards in three preseason games.

Edwards-Helarie suffered an MCL sprain against the Bills and was placed on injured reserve. He must spend a minimum of three weeks on injured reserve before he can be designated as “return to practice,” which would open a 21-day window for the team to decide whether to activate him to their 53-player roster.
