KC Chiefs activate Willie Gay Jr. from injury list. He’s questionable Sunday vs. Bills

The Chiefs have help on the way for their linebacker corps in advance of Sunday night’s home game against the Buffalo Bills.

Second-year linebacker Willie Gay Jr. has been activated from the injured reserve list, the team announced Saturday afternoon. Gay is designated as questionable, meaning he has a 50-50 chance to play.

Gay suffered a toe injury in the Chiefs’ preseason finale and was placed on injured reserve at the start of the regular season. The Chiefs designated him as “return to practice” earlier in the week, opening a 21-day window to evaluate his progress.

“As long as he can get in and know his stuff and feels comfortable with his foot, we’d be OK there,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Friday.

The Chiefs signaled their satisfaction with Gay’s progress by activating him. If he suits up for the game, Gay will join linebackers Anthony Hitchens, Ben Niemann, rookie Nick Bolton and Dorian O’Daniel.

To make room on the roster, the Chiefs waived linebacker Darius Harris.

The Chiefs also announced the elevation of defensive end Demone Harris from the practice squad. Harris bolsters their depth on the edge behind defensive ends Chris Jones, who is questionable for Sunday night’s game with a wrist injury, Frank Clark (who has missed games with hamstring problems), Alex Okafor and Mike Danna.
