Chiefs coach Andy Reid said the team is considering surgery for running back and special-teams player Cyrus Gray, who suffered a fractured hand Sunday during the 22-17 loss to the 49ers.

“They casted it up and we’ll see how that goes,” Reid said. “Potential surgery, so we are leaving the cast on. There are a couple of options, and both of which he could come back pretty quick.”

Gray has 31 yards and a touchdown in eight carries so far this season. He has not had any attempts in the last two games but did record a special-teams tackle Sunday.

Gaines, Owens hurt in collision

A late fourth-quarter collision between defensive backs Phillip Gaines and Chris Owens left both players with lingering injuries going into the bye week.

Reid said Gaines sustained a concussion but was already feeling better on Sunday night. Owens has a knee injury that was initially described as a contusion.

“Chris Owens caught his knee pretty good there with a bone bruise and his lateral collateral ligament was strained,” Reid said. “He is pretty sore today and we’ll just have to see how he is down the stretch.”
