Chiefs’ A.J. Jenkins, Marcus Cooper return to San Francisco, too
Quarterback Alex Smith isn’t the only Chiefs player who had a chance to get revenge against his former team Sunday.
Receiver A.J. Jenkins and cornerback Marcus Cooper are former 49ers, too. Jenkins, a first-round pick by the 49ers in 2012, was traded to the Chiefs before last season for receiver Jon Baldwin, while the Chiefs plucked Cooper, a seventh-round pick by the 49ers last year, off waivers before the season.
Jenkins got the start for injured starter Donnie Avery, but had a relatively quiet day, catching one pass for three yards and rushing once for a loss of two yards. He was targeted twice.
“Honestly man, I wanted to get this day over with,” Jenkins said. “I knew a lot was going to come with it, but I learned a lot as far as playing football and being the starter. (I want to) just go back and watch the film and see what I can do to correct my mistakes and get ready for San Diego.”
Jenkins, however, did get a chance to see that the 49ers’ fans had not forgotten him.
“I caught a pass and they started booing me and I started laughing because I already expected it,” Jenkins said. “It was all good. I love all the attention.”
As for Cooper, who was limited in practice this week with a knee injury, the 49ers seemed to target him, particularly in the first half. He was targeted six times, and allowed three catches for 65 yards and a touchdown, though he seemed to be pleading for an offensive pass interference penalty on the 9-yard touchdown he gave up to receiver Stevie Johnson.
