Here’s what the Vegas odds say about the Chiefs-Patriots game Sunday
Among the ways to demonstrate just how much the tide of the Chiefs’ franchise has changed over the past couple of seasons, this stands as one of the most illuminating.
The Chiefs are 7-point favorites against the Patriots at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday, marking just the third time since 2002 that the Patriots have been underdogs by at least a touchdown, according to ESPN Stats & Information.
And while New England has encountered significant change — most notably the departure of quarterback Tom Brady to Tampa Bay — the line might say more about the Chiefs. Here’s why: The Chiefs are favored in every home game this season, and the spread against the Patriots is actually the slimmest margin in which they’re favored at Arrowhead.
The over/under for Sunday’s game is 53 points, which atypically places a game involving the Chiefs among the middle of the pack this week. There are five other matchups with higher over/under listings.
The Chiefs are 2-1 against the spread this year after beating Baltimore in Week 3, a game in which they arrived as underdogs. Only one of their three games has reached the over.
The Patriots are also 2-1 against the spread in 2020.
Patrick Mahomes has improved his odds of winning the league’s MVP award to 4-to-1 (+400), per Oddschecker, but he’s second on that sheet. Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson, who broke a record with 14 touchdown passes in his first three games, is listed at 11-to-4 (+275).
A sneak peek of next week: The Chiefs are favored by 11 1/2 points against the visiting Raiders. That number, of course, is subject to change after the completion of Sunday’s games.
