Chiefs’ Sammy Watkins (concussion, neck) will practice Friday ... in some capacity
Chiefs wide receiver Sammy Watkins (concussion, neck) took a step in the right direction Friday.
Watkins remains in the NFL’s concussion protocol but “made it to the point where he can return to the (practice) field,” the Chiefs announced.
The team later listed Watkins a limited participant.
Before being deemed fit for a full return to live action, Watkins must be medically cleared. But his progress provides a glimmer of hope that he might be available for Monday night’s big game against the Baltimore Ravens.
Watkins suffered the injury early in the fourth quarter in Week 2 against the Los Angeles Chargers and did not finish the game.
If he can’t play in Week 3, the Chiefs have adequate depth at the wide receiver with Tyreek Hill, Demarcus Robinson, Mecole Hardman and Marcus Kemp on their active 53-player roster.
The Chiefs practice again Saturday, so Watkins’ status will be closely monitored before the team issues its final injury report with game-day designations.
In addition to Watkins, the Chiefs listed cornerback Charvarius Ward (hand) as a limited participant for a second straight day. Ward suffered the injury in the season-opening win over the Houston Texans and did not play in Week 2.
Running back Darrel Williams (ankle) returned to a full practice after being limited Thursday.
Defensive end Frank Clark (illness), cornerback Antonio Hamilton (groin), safety Juan Thornhill (knee), center Austin Reiter (knee) and defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi (ankle) practiced fully.
Linebacker Dorian O’Daniel (knee) and defensive end Alex Okafor (hamstring) did not practice Friday. Okafor suffered his injury in Week 1 and did not play against the Chargers.
For the Ravens, defensive end Calais Campbell (not injury related) returned to practice after missing Thursday. Cornerback Tavon Young (knee) and defensive tackle Brandon Williams (not injury related) did not practice Friday.
