One game in, one award won for Kansas City Chiefs rookie Clyde Edwards-Helaire

Chiefs rookie running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire has a weekly NFL award to showcase on his mantle after just one game.

Edwards-Helaire was voted the NFL’s FedEx Ground Player of the Week, the league announced Wednesday afternoon.

The recognition comes after Edwards-Helaire gouged the Houston Texans for 138 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries, averaging 5.5 yards per attempt, in the Chiefs’ 34-20 win in Week 1.

The Chiefs’ first-round pick in 2020 beat out the Raiders’ Josh Jacobs, who rushed for 93 yards and three touchdowns in Oakland’s season-opening win, and the Panthers’ Christian McCaffrey, who totaled 96 yards rushing and two touchdowns in his team’s loss.

Edwards-Helaire was one of three players to rush for more than 100 yards during the NFL’s opening weekend. The rookie’s 138 yards rushing led the league, followed by the Titans’ Derrick Henry (116) and the Steelers’ Benny Snell (113).

The Chiefs’ explosive rusher looks to make it two straight FedEx awards in Week 2 when he squares off against the Los Angeles Chargers, a team that allowed the Bengals to total 122 yards rushing and a touchdown in Week 1.
