Chiefs fans from Kansas going to games don’t have to quarantine, with two exceptions

Good news for Chiefs fans who live in Kansas: You won’t have to quarantine after attending NFL games in person as long as you follow certain steps, according to amended travel quarantine requirements by state health officials.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Thursday lifted the mandatory quarantine requirement for people attending out-of-state mass gatherings of 500 or more provided that they wear masks and maintain social distancing more than 6 feet.

But fans who don’t wear a mask or don’t maintain social distancing are still mandated to quarantine, according to a news release.

“We do not recommend attendance at any type of mass gathering event but recognize that some larger events may take appropriate precautions,” Dr. Lee Norman, secretary of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, said in a news release.

“If choosing to attend, people must practice social distancing and wear masks.”

For Thursday night’s Chiefs’ game against the Houston Texans at Arrowhead Stadium, the number of fans allowed inside has been limited to 22% of usual capacity and they are required to wear face masks when they are not eating or drinking.

The Chiefs have also spaced out seating assignments in the stands and have reminders throughout the stadium’s concourses to socially distance.

The Chiefs also are allowing fans to tailgate, although they can only do so with other fans who have tickets in their seating assignments.

Health officials define mass gatherings as any events that bring together 500 or more people at the same time in a single room such as an auditorium, stadium, arena, theater, meeting hall, conference room or any other confined indoor or outdoor space. That includes parades, fairs and festivals.

They do not include normal operations of airports, bus and train stations, medical facilities, libraries, shopping mall, offices, schools, restaurants, factories or grocery stores.

Under the travel quarantine mandate, Kansas residents required to quarantine for 14 days are:

  • People who attended or traveled to mass gatherings events out-of-state of more than 500 where people did not socially distance and wore masks.
  • People who traveled to Aruba between Aug. 27 and Sept. 10.
  • People who traveled between July 14 and Aug. 27 to countries with a CDC Level 3 Travel Health Notice and restrictions on entry into the United States, including China, Iran, European Schengen area, United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, and Brazil.
  • People who have been on a cruise ship or river cruise on or after March.
  • Anyone who has received notification form public health officials that there were in close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19.
