Chiefs’ Taco Charlton among inactive players in season opener against Texans

With no injuries to account for, the Chiefs’ short-list of inactive players for Thursday night’s season opener against the Houston Texans indicates that a pair of rookie defensive linemen will see action.

The Chiefs listed defensive end Taco Charlton, defensive end Demone Harris, tight end Ricky Seals-Jones rookie cornerback BoPete Keyes and offensive lineman Yasir Durant as not dressing for the game.

With Charlton and Harris inactive, the Chiefs will turn to rookies Tershawn Wharton and Mike Danna as part of their defensive line rotation. Wharton brings the defensive flexibility to play inside and outside, while Danna figures to be active on the edge.

Charlton’s status is a bit surprising. He enjoyed a strong training camp to make the initial 53-player roster. The veteran defensive end, a first-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, joined the Chiefs on a one-year deal during the offseason.

The Chiefs will dress three tight ends: Travis Kelce, Nick Keizer and Deon Yelder.

For the Texans, wide receiver Brandin Cooks, who was considered a game-time decision with a quad injury, is active. Receiver Keke Coutee, cornerback Cornell Armstrong, fullback Cullen Gillaspia, linebackers Dylan Cole and Jonathan Greenard and rookie offensive lineman Charlie Heck, the son of Chiefs offensive line coach Andy Heck, are inactive for the game,
