Chiefs’ Eric Fisher suffers concussion, now in NFL’s observation protocol, Reid says

The Chiefs are already working in new starters at both guard positions during training camp.

Now they’ll have to make do without starting left tackle Eric Fisher for a while.

“Fish had a concussion, so he’s in the protocol now.” Chiefs coach Andy Reid announced after Sunday’s practice.

Fisher appeared to suffer the concussion during a team drill midway through the padded practice. He walked off the field under his own power before a trainer took him to a medical tent, where he spent some time being evaluated. A Chiefs trainer then walked with Fisher inside the team’s training facility.

A Pro Bowl selection in 2019, Fisher is a critical piece on the offensive line as the main protector of quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ blind side. How soon he returns to the practice field depends on the severity of his concussion.

In the meantime, the Chiefs have some healthy options at Fisher’s spot opposite starting right tackle Mitchell Schwartz. Veteran lineman Mike Remmers, who can play all five positions on the line, will likely be up first to fill Fisher’s spot in the interim. The Chiefs also have Greg Senat and Jackson Barton returning from last year’s roster, and undrafted rookie free agent Yasir Durant, a Mizzou product, who can play outside.

The Chiefs open the regular season on Sept, 10, less than a month away.
