Kansas City Chiefs agree to terms with former Seahawks free safety Tedric Thompson

The Chiefs continue to tweak their roster ahead of on-field work for training camp.

The Chiefs agreed to terms with safety Tedric Thompson, his agent, David Canter, announced Tuesday night on Instagram. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The 6-foot, 204-pound Thompson entered the league in 2017 out of Colorado as a fourth-round pick with the Seattle Seahawks, where he spent three seasons before being released during this offseason.

Thompson, 25, appeared in 29 games with 16 starts in Seattle, totaling 80 tackles, three interceptions and five passes defensed. Durability proved a concern for Thompson over the past two seasons, as he missed 16 total games.

But when healthy, Thompson should bolster the free safety spot, a position he played the past two seasons in Seattle. This is an important consideration when considering Juan Thornhill continues to recover from an ACL injury.

Kansas City has adjusted its roster with veteran help in the past week. Thompson’s pending arrival comes days after the Chiefs signed veteran guard Kelechi Osemele, who adds depth on the offensive line following Laurent Duvernay-Tardif’s decision to opt out due to COVID-19 concerns in 2020.

Barring additional roster changes, the Chiefs’ safety group currently consists of Thompson, Thornhill, Tyrann Mathieu, Daniel Sorensen and Armani Watts. Rookie L’Jarius Sneed, the Chiefs’ fourth-round draft pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, can play safety and cornerback.
