Chiefs

No, Patrick Mahomes isn’t demanding the Chiefs change their team name. That’s fake

In this case, it really is fake news.

A tweet went viral Saturday claiming Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes wouldn’t play another game for the Chiefs until they changed their team name.

One problem: He never said it.

It’s fake.

The post comes from a mock account and attributes the news to ESPN reporter Adam Schefter, using the ESPN SportsCenter logo to deke followers into thinking it’s accurate. The Twitter name isn’t even spelled correctly — “SportsCenler,” it reads. But thousands fell for it anyway.

It’s another blip in the age of social media, where stories spread like wildfire — apparently regardless of their authenticity.

To set the record straight here: Mahomes never made any such demand.

But it didn’t stop the response. The tweet had been shared or liked thousands of times on Saturday. And it sparked a heated debate about whether he should be supported or not — again, for a statement he didn’t even make.

Mahomes has been vocal recently in his support on social justice issues, including supporting the Black Lives Matter movement and joining LeBron James’ voter registration cause. But he didn’t speak out on this.
