KC Chiefs’ Jamaal Charles wins AFC offensive player of the week

The Kansas City Star

Running back Jamaal Charles on Wednesday was named the AFC’s offensive player of the week for his performance in the Chiefs’ 41-14 win over the New England Patriots on Monday night.

Charles rushed for 92 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries and caught three passes for 16 yards and two touchdowns after missing the Chiefs’ win the previous week against the Miami Dolphins because of a high-ankle sprain.

“It’s good to have him back in the mix, most of all,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “For him to do as well as he did, that’s why he’s a great player.”

He is the second player in Monday Night Football history with at least 90 rushing yards, a rushing touchdown and two or more receiving touchdowns in a game. The other was New York Giants running back Ron Johnson, who accomplished the feat on Oct. 2, 1972.

This is the fourth time Charles, whose three touchdowns led all AFC players in week four, has won the honor. He last won it after a five-touchdown performance against Oakland last December.

His four career offensive-player-of-the-week awards are tied for the most by any Chiefs running back, along with Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson.

Reid on the Royals

Reid took a moment to congratulate the Royals for their 9-8 win over the Oakland Athletics in the AL Wild Card Game. With the win, the Royals advance to the American League Divisional Series against the Angels, which starts with game one at 8:07 p.m. Thursday night in Los Angeles.

“A quick shout out for the Royals,” Reid said. “What a great game last night, and they get to advance here against the Angels. It’s great for this city.”

Injury report

Receiver Donnie Avery has an adductor strain, while safety Eric Berry has a high-ankle sprain. Neither practiced Wednesday.

Running back Jamaal Charles (ankle), cornerback Sean Smith (groin) and linebacker Tamba Hali (knee) were limited participants.

Running back De’Anthony Thomas (hamstring), cornerback Chris Owens (thumb) and linebacker Frank Zombo (hamstring) were full participants. Thomas has missed the first four games with his hamstring injury.
