Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes dethrones Tom Brady as NFL’s top-selling player
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has uncrowned Tom Brady — first on the football field, and now off of it.
Mahomes, who led the Chiefs to their first championship in 50 years and was named the big game’s most valuable player, finished as the top-selling player in the NFL, according to figures released by the players association Friday.
Brady had held the title each of the previous two seasons while with New England. He has since signed with Tampa Bay this offseason.
The list compiles sales of all officially licensed NFL player-identified merchandise from March 1, 2019 to February 29, 2020, according to the NFL Players’ Association. That includes jerseys, shirts, hoodies, backpacks, wall decals, pennants, figurines, photos and several more items.
The NFLPA says it set an overall sales record for the sixth straight season, topping $1.9 billion during the 12-month period.
None more marketable than Mahomes. His jerseys have filled Arrowhead Stadium as he’s taken the league by storm over the past two seasons. The Chiefs’ third-year quarterback also appeared in national advertising campaigns for State Farm, Madden 2020, Head and Shoulder, Hunt’s Ketchup and many others.
Mahomes is the new No. 1 in retail. Brady, who has finished among the top-3 in 18 straight seasons, dropped to No. 2 for the first time in three years.
Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson, who won the league’s MVP honors in 2019, is third, followed by Dallas running back Ezekiel Elliott, Cleveland quarterback Baker Mayfield, Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Cleveland wide receiver Odell Beckman Jr., Chicago linebacker Khalil Mack, San Francisco quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and San Francisco George Kittle to round out the top-10.
