These 2 traits make new Chiefs lineman Remmers intriguing piece of Mahomes’ protection
Of the Chiefs’ three recent free-agent signings, one brings decidedly more NFL experience and versatility than the others to the Super Bowl champions.
Offensive lineman Mike Remmers has appeared in 79 games with 78 starts, including 14 starts in 2019 with the New York Giants.
The 6-foot-5, 308-pound veteran also exhibits an attribute the Chiefs covet: positional flexibility. He’ll be able to help protect Super Bowl MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes in many ways.
Remmers, who is set to enter his ninth season in the NFL, can play tackle and guard on both sides of the offensive line — no small thing in the Chiefs’ perpetual quest to protect their superstar signal-caller.
“I’ve been able to play multiple positions and I think that will help in the long run,” Remmers said. “It’s always nice to play more than one position.
Remmers joined the Chiefs in the wake of the departure of Stefen Wisniewski, who finished the regular season as the Chiefs’ starting left guard but signed a two-year free-agent deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers last month.
“I’m not sure what the future holds,” Remmers said, “but I’ll be ready for whatever they ask me to do.”
Whether Remmers begins the season as a starter remains to be seen, but it’s clear the Chiefs are happy to have the veteran offensive lineman on the roster.
“We welcome him aboard,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Thursday. “He’s got good talent (and brings) senior leadership into that offensive line group.”
