As NFL free agency looms, we know at least one Chiefs roster move
The NFL marches on.
As the sports world suspends its live entertainment because of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, the NFL will proceed with the league-wide negotiation window opening at 11 a.m. Monday, according to multiple reports. The new league year will still begin Wednesday.
With 21 players set to hit free agency, the Chiefs’ roster will encounter changes, and we know of at least one for certain.
The Chiefs will not bring back defensive tackle Xavier Williams, a source told The Star.
Williams, 28, a Grandview High School graduate, spent the past two years playing for his hometown team. But an ankle injury ravaged most of his 2019 season. It caused him to miss the final 11 games of the regular season before the Chiefs activated him for the playoffs, where he played 30 defensive snaps.
The Chiefs signed Williams to a two-year, $5.1 million contract before the 2018 season. Known as a run-stuffer, he contributed a career-best 47 tackles (25 solo) and 2 1/2 sacks in a healthy 2018 season. The ankle injury limited him to five games last year, in which he made eight tackles.
