Chiefs hire longtime Mizzou assistant coach, promote another to lead the passing game

For the first time in 24 years, Andy Hill has a new employer.

Hill, the second-longest tenured assistant football coach in Mizzou history, is finally relocating — a couple of hours west, to be precise.

The Chiefs announced Friday that Hill is joining their NFL staff as an assistant special teams coach to special teams coordinator Dave Toub.

The Chiefs also added a title to quarterbacks coach Mike Kafka. He is now the team’s passing game coordinator, as well, a natural potential successor should offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy get an NFL head coaching job in the future.

Hill’s move to Kansas City marks his first NFL job and finalizes his departure from a Missouri football program he has called come since 1996. He has coached a variety of positions in Columbia and became quite familiar with Kansas City as the program’s lead recruiter in the area.

“Andy Hill has always been a rock star,” said Kelly Donohoe in an interview with The Star last fall. Donohoe, a longtime Blue Springs High coach, recently accepted the same job at Rockhurst. “He’s as good a recruiter as we’ve had a very long time.”

With the Chiefs, Hill will reunite with Toub, who coached at Missouri through 2000. Hill graduated from Missouri in 1985, where he played wide receiver.

Kafka, 32, has been with the Chiefs since 2017, initially hired as an offensive quality control coach. He spent parts of six seasons in the league as a quarterback.

For the past two years, he served as the Chiefs’ quarterback coach, working closely with Patrick Mahomes. The title of passing game coordinator represents a promotion after other teams showed interest in Kafka for available coordinator roles.
