Chiefs’ Tyrann Mathieu is bringing his ‘celebrity kickball weekend’ to KC

Are you ready for some ... kickball?

Chiefs defensive back Tyrann Mathieu will be bringing his annual “Celebrity Kickball Weekend” to Kansas City in May.

This will be the third year of the event, which was held in New Orleans the first two years. Proceeds will benefit Mathieu’s foundation, which says it aims to “impact the lives of financially disadvantaged children and youth through encouragement, opportunities and resources to achieve their dreams in Kansas City & and his hometown of New Orleans.”

Mathieu talked about the foundation while on the “At Home with Linda and Drew Scott” podcast.

“We go into a school, maybe a boys and girls club and we set up the things that they may not have at home: computer, maybe it’s a green screen so they can act or whatever. Maybe it’s a guitar, so we try to put these things in front of these kids in hopes that it can kind of keep them going,” Mathieu said.

“I don’t want to tell people to play football. I want people to be able to have options, to be able to choose and pick their passions. I feel like a lot of the people I grew up with it was like one thing or the other. You don’t want to limit kids. I feel like the whole reason I do this is because of people like my grandmother.

“She did so much for me, not just me, but my whole family, even strangers. She was always so encouraging. She gave us so much hope and she gave us so much love. Anytime I do anything in the community, I think it’s a reflection of how I feel about her.”

According to Mathieu’s website, the kickball weekend will start May 15 at the Uptown Theater with a “Welcome to KC” party. People who will play in the kickball game will on hand and there will be “live and silent auction items which include the opportunity to participate in the kickball game yourself.”

On May 16, the kickball game will be played at T-Bones Stadium. The website says Mathieu’s Chiefs teammates are expected to participate. The teams also will compete in giant tricycle races and mascot races, per the website.
