Chiefs’ Eric Bieniemy reportedly rebuffs multiple offers to become Colorado’s coach

It appears Chiefs coach Andy Reid won’t be looking for a new offensive coordinator.

When the head coaching job opened at the University of Colorado earlier this month, one of the first people reported to be targeted by the school was Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy.

Bieniemy is the Buffaloes’ career leading rusher (3,940 yards from 1987 to 1990) and had a school-record 41 rushing touchdowns. He also was Colorado’s offensive coordinator for two seasons before being hired by the Chiefs in 2013.

But multiple reporters said Bieniemy turned down Colorado.

In fact, Mike Klis of 9News in Denver said the school offered the job on Wednesday and again on Thursday.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter expects NFL teams to pursue Bieniemy for a head coaching job in the near future. Schefter also believes Bieniemy has “too good of a situation” with the Chiefs to want to leave for the college ranks.

Others echoed that sentiment.

Curtis Crabtree of Pro Football Talk wrote: “Bieniemy is coming off a Super Bowl victory with the Chiefs and is likely to be a hot candidate for any openings in the NFL after the upcoming season as long as Patrick Mahomes and the rest of the Kansas City offense continue to shine. Bieniemy had interest from several teams this past cycle as well but was passed over for different candidates as the Chiefs season progressed into February.”

Bieniemy interviewed with the Browns, Panthers and Giants for head coaching jobs after the season ended.

James Palmer of the NFL Network tweeted that the Chiefs “organization is excited for him to return.”

Colorado’s coaching job opened when Mel Tucker left for Michigan State.
